PACKAGING
NZXT didn’t miss out on equipping the box of the N7 B550 with its traditional purple and white flair. Not really that compact but presentation-wise it looks a whole lot different compared to traditional mailer boxes bearing motherboards. Not really a definitive way of judging motherboards, so let’s get on with the contents.
Simple enough, NZXT packs in the antenna, two M.2 screws, SATA cables, and a manual inside. That’s about it. Not sure if it’s different in retail packaging but we’re still hoping we get some sort of bonuses that would sweeten the purchase like it was a gift. Not a dealbreaker, but again could be better on this front. Dear NZXT, a badge or even a sticker, please?
DESIGN AND LAYOUT
This thing is beautifully classy. If you have to buy this, buy the white version since there’s a whole lot of options already for black motherboards. But hey, if black is still what you’d want to go for, go ahead.
Okay moving ahead, if you’re familiar with NZXT’s cases, the N7 B550 fits right at home with it. Those strong angled heavy metal shroud keep the design language with the company’s cases. No RGB here, which is a good thing so you’re not overwhelmed with that and it’s not going to appear in random places. There’s 12V RGB and 5V ARGB header at the bottom that’s clearly indicated, and two NZXT RGB headers at the top as well.
For layout, the N7 B550 is stacked with fan headers. 1 CPU Fan header, 1 AIO_PUMP header, and 5 SYS_FAN headers located all over the board.
There’s also a power button and a reset button at the bottom situated beside the front panel headers and the POST LEDs. They come quite handy if you’re looking for a test bench or you just need to debug things quick. Three USB 2.0 headers at the bottom, which likely are made for NZXT products for its CAM connection. There’s also six SATA 6Gbps ports on the side, between front panel USB 3.2 Gen 1 headers. A front panel USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C header is located on the right below the 24-pin ATX power connector. And also to note, the N7 B550 has an 8+4-pin 12V power connector on the upper left.
The two M.2 slots have a magnetic cover, with both supporting 2242/2260/2280. They look super clean but the lack of cooling might pose some issues later on.
You’ll also get four DDR4 RAM slots here. The integrated IO shield is also a nice touch, and from there you’ll get 1 USB 3.2 Gen 2 (Type-C), 3 USB 3.2 Gen 2 (Type-A), 4 USB 3.2 Gen 1 (Type-A), and 2 USB 2.0 ports. Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth V5.2 are also here.
PERFORMANCE
I’ve been eager to see the performance difference for the Radeon RX 6600 XT for all AMD chipsets, and now seems like a good time to do just that. For starters, there’s a Ryzen 5 3600X on stock on the N7 B550 with memory at 16GB 3600MHz (XMP).

FINDINGS
We're looking at the NZXT N7 B550 as an upgrade path from previous chipsets or how it stands against the cheaper A520 alternative. The difference is there and at some parts glaringly obvious.
That's not the only reason you'll be looking into getting NZXT's offering here, I believe. The N7 B550 is designed to work well within NZXT's ecosystem with CAM and other components like cooling and lighting. Now, at the price it comes off as a bit intimidating given that there are cheaper alternatives with the same chipset. But then again, it's more of a competition in feature set rather than performance alone.
Now, at this price range as well, there are several X570 motherboards here that won't be limited in PCIe lane count as opposed to B550. Not to mention the active VRM cooling. It's important to note that not all would be hellbent on storage so the limit might be out of equation to some. The performance difference on stock is also negligible when it comes to gaming comparing the two.
I'm pressed here because while the N7 B550 looks great and it's a definite yes if you're going for thematic builds, this could have been a greater presented option if it came in mini ITX form factor. But that's a matter of preference, I guess?
So, would the NZXT N7 B550 be worth it? Performance is wonderful and it's a great looking motherboard that sets itself apart from the competition. Not sure about the remaining life of AM4 right now, but presently? It's still kicking hard.
