The Philips 275E1S is a 27-inch display featuring crystal clear Quad HD resolution, AMD FreeSync, and a whole lot more. And it’s a visual treat.

We’ve had good runs with a couple of 1080p 27-inch monitors, and while that’s our threshold for pixel density, we could always do better with something more sharper. You'd want to take advantage of that screen size, after all. So today, we are going to take a look at the Philips 275E1S, a 27-inch display featuring crystal clear Quad HD resolution, AMD FreeSync, and a whole lot more. And it’s a visual treat.

UNBOXING

Right off the bat, the Philips 275E1S arrives in a standard white box containing all the essentials tucked inside and out of styrofoam: the monitor itself, the square-ish stand, a power brick and an HDMI cable along with paperwork for warranty and whatnot.

DESIGN

Now, for the monitor itself, it’s a 27-inch frameless IPS 1440P display. Pixel density is 109 PPI, and brightness peak is at 250 cd/m2. Now, this doesn’t come with any gaming branding from Philips, but that shouldn’t distract you from the fact that you can still play games on it. Esports titles are still preferable with higher refresh rates as opposed to 75Hz the Philips 275E1S features. It's doable, sure. But this stands out more for your use of immersive titles if your setup can handle it.  

The stand is pretty basic. It tilts, it’s sturdy enough and doesn't wobble when you use your keyboard. Although it does a bit whenever you tinker with the OSD settings. It can even double as a platform where you can put your phone on for an easy reach. 

And if you have a monitor arm you prefer using, it has a VESA mount just for that.

The ports are what you’d expect. There’s one a piece for DisplayPort, HDMI and VGA alongside the DC and 3.5mm audio out sandwiching them. I still see no purpose for VGA ports nowadays, and it would have been preferable to see an extra HDMI port there for the sake of convenience for multiple devices. No speakers here, so you’ll want to make good use of that audio out jack if you choose to go that route.  

OSD buttons are once again fairly standard, similar to the Philips 272M8 we've reviewed several months back. Nothing to complain here. You'll get quick access to SmartImage Game for different profiles including modes for FPS, Racing, RTS, as well as two personal settings if you prefer to fine tune it yourself.

Backlight Bleed

Backlight bleed isn't exactly uniform across the board, so while this won't be a conclusive test, it would at least provide some idea on the quality brands offer before shipping out their products. Test is done with 1/60 shutter speed at f/3.5 aperture and 800 ISO under no ambient lighting.

CONCLUSION

So, here we are. 1440P resolution on a 27-inch brings a nice touch of clarity and sharpness. It's easily more affordable than 4K monitors at this scale, not to mention less taxing on your hardware. Balance is where it's at. It's a treat to watch high-resolution videos on YouTube and Netflix, and play AAA titles like Resident Evil 4 Remake, God of War, and Cyberpunk 2077. 75Hz is doable for such use cases, although if you prefer Esports titles and competitive shooters, then you'd be better suited with 144Hz on a 1080P panel at around the same price range or lower depending on your budget and preference.
